Music of Monteverdi: Songs of Love and War

November 12, 4pm

Love and War — and love as war — these themes are explored by The Music of Monteverdi: Songs of Love and War. This collaborative concert by Ars Antigua and the Oriana Singers celebrates the genius of Claudio Monteverdi (1576-1643), whose work represented the culmination of madrigal composition in Italy while leading the way to new musical forms. The age-old conflict between Mars and Venus provides this concert’s leitmotif with emotions veering wildly from ecstasy to despair, just as Monteverdi’s Madrigali guerrieri et amorosi are characterized by two very different styles. The guerrieri make use of Monteverdi’s famous ‘agitato’ (which he invented), brisk tempos and notes in rapid-fire succession; the amorosi are no less passionate, but they take their time with subtle tone colors, suspensions, and dizzying virtuoso passages.

All concerts are on Sundays and cost $15 per ticket. Children under 16 are free. A subscription to the whole series of six concerts is $72, a savings of $18. As always at the Barn, you may BYOB.
