Handel Week announces 2007 concerts

Oak Park's Handel Week, the only festival devoted to the music of G. F. Handel in the Chicago area, is thrilled to announce the details of its eighth season! Led by Artistic Director Dr. Dennis Northway, Handel Week will present three concerts in February 2007. Don't miss Northway's pre-concert lectures, complete with sherry, or the meet-the-musicians reception following each performance. Concert 1: The Grand Handel Saturday, February 17, 2007, 7:30pm (lecture at 6:45pm) Concerto grosso in C minor, HWV 326 Concerto grosso in A Major, HWV 329 Cantata for soprano, "Crudel tirrano amor," HWV 97 Cantata for soprano, "Silete venti," HWV 242 As his imaginative and elegant concerti grossi illustrate, Handel didn't need a libretto to exercise his flair for drama. Rounding out the program are two ravishing cantatas for soprano featuring the immensely gifted Sarah Gartshore. Concert 2: The Intimate Handel Monday, February 19, 2007, 7:30pm (lecture at 6:45pm) Cantata for soprano, "Clori, ove sei," HWV 93 Cantata for soprano and guitar, "No se emendara jamas," HWV 140 English songs for soprano Cantata for soprano, "Da sete ardente afflitto," HWV 100 plus two violin sonatas Get to know Handel's cosmopolitan side with an unusual program of chamber music featuring Kimberly McCord, soprano, Thomas Yang, violin, Susan Ross, cello and Dennis Northway, harpsichord. Concert 3: Samson, HWV 57 Sunday, February 25, 2007, 3pm (lecture at 2:15pm) Based on Milton's retelling of the famous Bible story, this tale of betrayal, determination and the triumph of the human spirit unfolds in wondrously moving choruses and impassioned arias. Featuring Eric Ashcroft as Samson, Kimberly McCord as Delilah, and Nicci Krebasch, Rosalind Lee, Ruth Lidecka, Anne Reisig, Henry Hunt, Philip Kraus and Warren Kaplan.
