On Friday, April 20, at 8:00 p.m. in the Leighton Concert Hall of the DeBartolo Performing Arts Center (DPAC) at the University of Notre Dame, the California-based ensemble Magnificat, directed by Warren Stewart, will present a concert of seventeenth-century sacred music for the Easter season. The concert will feature compositions of the Milanese Benedictine nun Chiara Margharita Cozzolani (1602-1676). Cozzolani, one of the major composers in Milan in the seventeenth century, composed these works for performance at her convent, St. Radegonda. The program will include musical settings from the liturgy for Easter Vespers, following the Tridentine rite, and will feature Cozzolani's musical settings of five psalms and the /Magnificat/ as well as a number of her motets; in accordance with the practice of the time, her motets will serve as antiphon substitutes. The compositions, which include writing for double-choir as well as soloists, will be performed by an ensemble of vocalists and instrumentalists performing on period instruments. Tickets are $25.00 for the general public, $20.00 for Notre Dame faculty and staff, and $10.00 for students. However, the DPAC is pleased to extend Early MusiChicago enthusiasts discount pricing to this event of $10 per person. Groups may forward a list of patrons to the Ticket Office via fax at 574-631-9411 and make individual purchases over the phone or at the Ticket Office here at the DeBartolo Performing Arts Center. Patrons only need to identify themselves as being with Early MusiChicago to receive the special pricing. Thank you for your time. We hope many will find Magnificat to be an inspiring Early Music experience.
