Evanston Bassist Jerry Fuller Wins Early Music Outreach Award
HIGHWOOD, Ill. – Early Music America awarded Jerry Fuller, Evanston, the Early Music Outreach Award for his work Midwest Young Artists (MYA), one of the leading youth music ensemble programs in the Midwest.
Fuller was nominated for this award by MYA Director Allan Dennis for directing and developing MYA’s Early Music program over the past four years. As part of its growing Early Music program, MYA presents two Early and New Music concerts each year. During the 2009-2010 season, the Nov. 15, 2009 concert will feature Chicago Symphony Orchestra violist Charlie Pikler, and the concert on March 7, 2010 will feature violinist David Douglass. In addition to these performances, MYA offers an Early Music category in its annual Walgreens Concerto Competition, which will take place Jan. 2-3, 2010. MYA also offers an Early Music Workshop in collaboration with Ars Antigua, a group of Chicago musicians who perform on period instruments, as part of its summer programming at Carthage College.
In addition to his work with MYA, Fuller is principal double bassist of The Baroque Band and a member of the period instrument forces for Chicago’s Music of the Baroque and Chicago Opera Theater. He is the director of Ars Antigua, and he writes about period instruments and performance practice for The Strad, Double Bassist, and Bass World magazines.
Midwest Young Artists is one of the leading youth music ensemble programs in the Midwest and represents some of the best young musicians in the country. The program offers exceptional training in jazz, choral, chamber and orchestral instruction. Midwest Young Artists was founded in 1993. MYA currently reaches more than 600 students from 74 communities in the metropolitan Chicago area, with students ranging in age from 2nd through 12th grades. MYA has five youth orchestras, more than 60 chamber music ensembles, three choral groups, an all-inclusive jazz program, and classes in music theory and history. Students have the opportunity to travel abroad and to perform in major venues throughout Chicago and around the world. Leading the nation in chamber music instruction, MYA graduates are accepted at the most selective conservatories, universities and colleges in the country.
