“Transatlantic Voyages: 18th Century Galant Music In the Americas and Europe” on Saturday, February 25, 2012
Orchestra Uniquely Committed To Performing Rediscovered Musical Treasures – Many Of Which Have Never Been performed In the United States
CHICAGO, IL – Chicago Arts Orchestra (CAO) continues its commitment to perform musical works from Colonial Latin America with its second concert of the season, “Transatlantic Voyages: 18th Century Galant Music in the Americas and Europe”. The concert highlights the transatlantic connection between old and new world galant music written at the same point in time in the Americas and in Europe. The concert will be performed at 8 p.m. Saturday, February 25, 2012 at St. Luke Church, 1500 W. Belmont Avenue, Chicago.
Conducting this concert will be CAO Artistic Director Javier José Mendoza. Vocalists include mezzo-soprano Elda McGinty-Peralta, soprano Eleanor Ranney-Mendoza and tenor Sandro Naglia. The orchestra will be joined by the Chicago Arts Chorale. CAO is comprised of professional musicians who maintain active performing schedules locally, nationally and internationally. In addition, the concert includes a free pre-concert “Prelude” discussion beginning at 7:30 p.m. to provide concertgoers with background to enable them to more fully appreciate the concert experience.
"This concert illustrates the transatlantic musical connection between the New World and the Old World during the 18th Century when adventurous immigrants traveled the high seas bringing with them, their compositional style and harmonic language,” explained Mendoza. “This new brand of music called galant was born in Naples, Italy and became a prevailing cosmopolitan style of the early classical era. Many musicians, just as people in other facets of society, sought an exciting life in the New World. These adventurous immigrants endured long weeks at sea to realize their dreams in the busy colonial capitals of New Spain."
“Transatlantic Voyages” includes works by Ignacio Jerusalem, Mexico; Johann Adolph Hasse, Germany and Italy; Niccolò Jomelli, Italy; Santiago Billoni, and Durango, Mexico.
The mission of Chicago Arts Orchestra is to reach underserved audiences by championing a wide variety of serious music and presenting programs at affordable prices. CAO performs great music from the old canon and the new canon, from a range of historical periods spanning the creation of the orchestral genre through the present day, and most importantly, by composers who have been marginalized by their birth, ethnicity, religion or other circumstances. The musicians and creative artists at the heart of CAO utilize innovative presentation and programming to bring this music to both traditional and new audiences, work to re-energize its appeal to younger concert goers while creating a new canon that rediscovers important, neglected musical works.
General admission tickets are $17 with $15 for students and seniors. A $25 reserved patron ticket is also available. Tickets may be purchased at the door the day of the concert for $20, $15 for student/senior and $25 patron. Purchase tickets at www.chicagoartsorchestra.org or call 773-248-0644.
