BACH holds Young Baroque Artists' Competition

Baroque Artists of Champaign-Urbana (BACH) has begun a new initiative this year. The Young Baroque Artists Competition is an opportunity for high-school-age students studying vocal or instrumental chamber music of the baroque period. The winners will be featured at one of BACH's Thursday evening concerts.

The idea originated with Nicholas Temperley, a former president of BACH and a retired professor of musicology at the University of Illinois School of Music. It is intended to encourage a new generation to take up the growing interest in the music of the 17th and early 18th centuries. It gives fuller expression to BACH's educational mission as a not-for-profit organization supported by the Illinois Arts Council. It also helps to recognize the dedicated work of music teachers at the Conservatory of Central Illinois, in area high schools, and in private practice.

The response has been encouraging. Fourteen individual students have entered the contest, as well as five ensemble groups. All are aged 14-18, and all are living or studying in Champaign County. Some are singers, others play instruments ranging from the piccolo to the double bass. They will present
music by Bach, Handel, Vivaldi, Purcell, and several other baroque composers.

The auditions will take place in the Memorial Room of Smith Music Hall (805 S. Mathews Ave., Urbana), on Saturday, April 1, from 9 am to 1 pm. They are open to the public. The judges are Professor Chester L. Alwes, music director of BACH; Professor Susan Cobb, of the School of Music at Millikin University; and Mr. Jack Ranney, orchestra conductor for Parkland Community College and a former director of outreach musical activities for the University of Illinois.

The winners of the competition, as well as receiving cash prizes contributed by donors to BACH, will be invited to perform their pieces at the Verde Gallery, 17 E. Taylor St., Champaign, at a concert beginning at 8 pm on Thursday, April 20. This is part of "Bach and Beyond," the well-received series of chamber concerts that began last year, offered by courtesy of Verde Gallery.
