LISTEN IN ON THE GRANDEST MUSIC, AND GOSSIP,
OF EIGHTEENTH-CENTURY PARIS

CHICAGO--From March 31 through April 3, 2005, the Newberry Consort and the Alliance Française will present A Salon in the City of Lights, a lavish feast of fine music and good gossip.  The concert will feature cantatas, airs and suites from the Golden Age of French Baroque, including composers Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683-1764) and Marin Marais (1656-1728), interspersed with readings from journals of the period that describe life in eighteenth-century Paris.

A Salon in the City of Lights will feature Newberry Consort soprano Ellen Hargis and gambist Mary Springfels with guests Elizabeth Blumenstock, baroque violin, and Jillon Stoppels Dupree, harpsichord.  Reader Philippe Schaller will interject rousing hearsay from the period between pieces.

The Newberry Consort will present four performances of A Salon in the City of Lights in Chicago, Oak Park, and Evanston.  Ticket prices vary by section and venue, but range from $21-$38 for general attendance, $19-$34 for Library Associates and seniors, and $11-$19 for students.  Open rehearsal tickets are $10, $7, and $5, respectively.  For more information, call the Center for Public Programs at (312)255-3700.
