Ars Musica Chicago will perform a concert "From Captivity to Creation: Music from the Age of Slavery", featuring music by African-American composers of the 18th and early 19th centuries, with emphasis on the music of Francis Johnson.  Including works by Chevalier de Saint-Georges, a composer of African descent who influenced Mozart.  Readings from relevant authors will demonstrate how, despite tremendous odds, artists of African descent were able to create powerful and moving music.
